Available Internships

We have a need for interns every semester and we accept applications year-round for these positions.  They are unpaid, but can count for school credit, resume building and/or volunteer hours and the expectation is 10-20 hours per week (depending on position).

These are designed for college students, but we will accept people trying to re-enter the workforce, gain experience in this field and high school students if they are highly motivated and capable of the duties.  All interns need to be able to easily work without direct supervision and be self-motivated and want to really help us make a difference.

All internships can be renewed for additional semesters/quarters with mutual agreement between intern and Leadership Team.  Preferences for future internships will be given to previous successful interns.  Preference is given to applicants with flexible hours and scheduling and who are available frequently.

Other than our bi-monthly adoption events OR fostering an animal in your home, there is very little "playing with fluffy kittens and puppies" and a lot of intensive teamwork and coordination into making UOH a successful organization.  If you are interested in the "fluffy puppies and kittens" aspect of our organization, we suggest you sign up to be a foster home!

The successful candidate must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically and demonstrate flexibility to persist until goals are achieved. They must be proficient in or willing to quickly learn internet applications such as email, basic Facebook, database management, Microsoft Word and others.

Please send an email to beourpet@gmail.com with the title of the SPECIFIC internship you would like to apply for, your experience, interest, goals, related talents (and/or a cover letter/resume), available hours, and term requested (Spring 2014 etc).

Available Volunteering Positions

 Creative/Skilled Projects

Can you sew?  Knit? Build things?  Are you handy?  We need people who have the ability to help us by taking on small creative projects as needed.  Our current needs are:

*SEWING – we really need BELLY BANDS to send home with our recently-neutered male dogs to help with their house training.  They are VERY SIMPLE to make.  If you can cut out two matching skinny rectangles (1 of cotton and 1 of light fleece) and sew them together and attach Velcro, you can do this!  We can provide the materials (except sewing machine itself) or you may donate the materials and we will give you a receipt for tax purposes.  We need ALL lengths and widths especially for dogs in the 2-25 lb range (need a LOT) and in the 26-50 lb range (need a few).  Just measure your dog and make some that size and then make some bigger and smaller.  Here is a handy website that shows how to do it  http://www.paralyzeddogs.org/belly-band/

*KITTY CONDO CONSTRUCTION:  We need someone who can build us kitty condos made out of wood and chicken wire for our foster homes.  We are open to design if you have an idea, please let us know. We can purchase the materials.  We also have some metal ones that need cleaned, painted, assembled and made ready to use.

*AIR CONDITIONING:  We need to add a portable air conditioning system to our administrative building for the summer months when it is unbearable.  We will need a hole cut in the wall… so some skill is required.  We will purchase materials/AC if needed.

*PLUMBING:  We want to add a doggy wash station in our admin building and need someone who understands plumbing to make this happen.  There is water in the building, but not in our suite.  If possible to have a washer/dryer in there, we would like to do that too.

Transport Volunteers

We need dogs and cats taken near and far… we always need willing people to drive (or fly) them from here to there.  We can provide gas and toll money if needed (or we can provide you with a receipt for tax purposes if you wish to donate such things).  Most of our transports originate in or around Martinez (94553) or Pittsburg (94565), CA.  A lot are relatively local (within 1 hour).  We often go to South Lake Tahoe.  We have gone as far as Portland.  We would like to go to Idaho.  Please let us know if you are willing to take cats and/or dogs (and perhaps birds or small mammals) in your vehicle to another destination.  All animals will be provided with a crate.  You will be given a drop cloth for your seats “just in case” and all animals will be vaccinated, flea free, free of contagious disease to the best ability of our veterinarian, spayed/neutered and had medical issues handled.

Social Media Scouts

We are in need of more “likes” on Facebook.  It is our goal to get to 50,000… we are not even 1/10th there.  Help us get there by sharing and commenting and following and asking your friends to do the same.  Make a goal of “likes” to recruit for us and report back to us so we can see the ripple effect.  We do not share sad stories or urgent dogs or anything else unpleasant on our site.  Help us help more animals!  It’s free and easy and you can put as much time as you have into it =)

Housekeeping/Organizational Volunteers

Nobody likes to do it, but we need people willing to help us clean up after our animals.  Our administrative office gets SO many donations and it is a huge job to keep them organized and ready to be given to our foster homes.  There is laundry that needs to be done.  Trash that needs to be taken out.  Scrubbing crates and litterboxes and kennels and everything else.  We use so much of our vet’s space that we like to scrub their kennel rooms too and we have PLENTY of need in this area.  This is a great project for a group of people to tackle on a weekend for a community project or a project for several people to assist on once a week or month.

Umbrella of Hope (UOH) actively seeks to recruit volunteers without regard to race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or physical handicap. UOH also reserves the right to temporarily or permanently deny entry to the volunteer program. Possible reasons for denial may include but are not limited to the following: personal goals not compatible with the goals and philosophy of UOH, lack of professionalism, performance and conduct issues such as absenteeism and neglect of animals. You must be over 18 years of age, or have the written consent of your guardian, to volunteer for Umbrella of Hope. Volunteering for UOH can be counted as Community Service hours.

This form is intended for you to tell us more about your interests so that we may correctly determine which volunteer or internship area you would most benefit in. It is our goal that volunteers and interns gain valuable and meaningful experiences while being in our organization.
